Stage combat is the theatrical representation of violence performed during a live performance that focuses on safety and repetition.This class will focus on unarmed combat.Just as a ballet dancer must first learn a tondu or plié before they can perform the Nutcracker an actor too must first learn the basics before they can pick up a sword and play Romeo.Unarmed stage combat teaches these basics, such as partnering, timing, communication, distance, and safety.The curriculum will consist of safe, yet theatrically viable slaps, punches, kicks, falls, sweeps, throws, rolls, and take downs.
Samantha Kaufman is an actor and movement director; specializing in fight direction, intimacy direction, and circus theatre. After being transplanted to Chicago to study circus arts with Actors Gymnasium; she is now based in the Midwest region and travels to perform in and fight/intimacy/movement direct productions across the nation. She has her BFA from the University of Wyoming and her MFA from Florida Atlantic University. She is also an advanced actor/combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and an intermediate actor/combatant with Fight Directors Canada. In all her work, Samantha is dedicated to the growth and development of the art form and the artists, in order to support a vibrant and healthy artistic community.
Rehearsal Tricks – 12pm to 2pm
Objective: Learn how to better rehearse a fight including weapons
Description: This class will explore how to keep fights fresh and keep them developing forward through these rehearsal tricks. You will specifically learn how to keep rehearsal time efficient and focused.
Ultimate Defender - 2:30pm to 4:40pm
Objective: Participants will learn and reinforce basic parries as well as cross parries, reinforced parries, replacement parries, and parallel parries. Leave with an understanding of Rapier and Dagger parries.
Description: Learn basic rapier and dagger through the lens of the defender. Focus will be on training a myriad of defenses, enable to create the ultimate defender.
The class is offered at a low price of just $30 for one or $50 for both per person.No prior experience required. (Teens and adults only please.)
Samantha Kaufman is an actor and movement director; specializing in fight direction, intimacy direction, and circus theatre. She is a certified Intimacy Director with Intimacy Directors International. She is based in the Midwest region and travels to perform in and fight/intimacy/movement direct productions across the nation. She has her MFA from Florida Atlantic University. A Jeff Nominated Fight Choreographer. A Babes with Blades Theate Company Ensemble Member. She is also an advanced actor/combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and an intermediate actor/combatant with Fight Directors Canada. She is fiercely passionate about advocacy for artists and spreading consent practices through theatre and circus communities. She couldn’t be prouder of the opportunities to empower artists with this work.
